  • Autumn, Halloween, Bonfires and Raincoats!

    Hello all Bah Humbug followers!

How are you finding the drop in temperature as we enter autumn? Bit of a shock after the sunshine of the summer.  Here in Masham the raincoats and umbrellas have made an appearance but for half term week it looks as though the sun will be shining, for at least some of the time anyway. Let's hope it last until Halloween so that all the Trick or Treaters out there can stay dry while they scare their victims!

Lots of accommodation in the area, so check out the Visit Masham site for options.

  • What on earth is going on with the weather??

    Hi folks

Who's been suffering the very changeable and slightly bizarre weather changes this week?  One minute it's bright sunshine, as it is now in Masham, and the next it's snowing as it did for quite a few hours yesterday?

All this changeability has such an effect on the type of things we sell in the shop.  Earlier this week people were seated at our outside table enjoying our Brymor Ice Cream, but yesterday they would have been covered in snow!  Perhaps our stocks of winter warmers, such as Winter Mixture, Army & Navy or Aniseed Twists are going to continue to sell for a while.

However, this morning the sun is shining! So it could be sweets more reminiscent of summer that draw in the customers.  How about Edinburgh Rock, or Berwick Cockles, both of which remind me of childhood holidays.  The ever popular Sherbet Lemons are a good sunshine sweet, as are our range of chewy bonbons...  I wonder if we could categorise all our sweets by season?  Perhaps too difficult for some of the more 'guilty pleasure' types such as Salted Caramel Fudge or Treacle Toffees.

Whatever the weather, Bah Humbugs has a vast array of sweets for you to choose from so why not pop in, or visit our website?  I for one however, will be hoping for a little more sunshine this summer.

  • More bunting facts....

    Hello again

After all the excitement about the bunting I thought it only right to share a little bit more information for those of you not in Yorkshire or not suffering from Le Tour Fever!

In November 2013, in readiness for Le Tour, Harrogate Borough Council launched the 'Le Tour de bunting' project, asking for volunteer knitters to knit tiny jerseys to be strung up around Harrogate Borough in readiness for the Tour.

They were inundated with responses and had to stop taking any more knitters on!

    Go Yorkshire!!

  • Bunting Blunder!

    Good Morning Blog fans!

The talk of the town today is bunting - who would have believed something so trivial could cause such ructions?

If you have been reading our recent blogs about the impending arrival of Le Tour de France in our North Yorkshire market town of Masham, then you will have read about the fabulous (tiny) knitted jerseys that have been strung up around the town as bunting.

Yesterday North Yorkshire County Council came and removed the bunting!  Why?  Because "We noticed that the lighting columns were leaning and in the interest of safety we asked for it to be taken down and not to be hung from lighting columns", a spokeperson from the Council has said.

Apparently, if the (tiny) knitted jerseys were to get wet the weight of them might pull the lamp post over.  If you check out the link to BBC news you will see just how tiny these jerseys are, and you will also see one of the offending in the picture.  Now if this is all it takes to make a lamp post lean enough to be a safety issue, then I would think that North Yorkshire County Council need to come and ensure that the posts are secured a little better.

We have also hit the local news on Stray FM!

    https://twitter.com/search?q=bunting&src=typd

Bah Humbugs with BuntingResidents and businesses like ourselves now have the bunting strung up on our walls (let's hope these are slightly less likely to fall over than the lamp posts!!!)

Why don't you have a drive out to Masham this weekend and see for yourself?

Pop into Bah Humbugs and browse our shelves for your favourite sweets.  Strawberries & Cream, Refresher Chews, loads of Liquorice, Sherbet Pips, scrumptious Toffees and delicious Fudge, a fantastic selection of hard boiled sweets.

  • Le Tour Fever

If you could see our little market town of Masham right now it couldn't fail to bring a smile to your face.  The excitement is building at a great speed and we still have three weeks before the epic race reaches our lovely Yorkshire Dales town.

Mini 'jerseys' in all the racing colours are strung up around the town and, as bunting goes, these are fabulous! We have flags flying, brightly coloured bicycles adorning shop fronts and all sorts of imaginative decorations put up by local businesses, making the town a very happy and jolly place to be.  And the sun is shining which makes it all so much more pleasant for everyone.

Bah Humbugs has a bicycle with the King of the Mountain colours - white with red spots - which looks amazing about our doorway.

If you haven't yet decided where you want to be to watch Le Grand Depart then why not come to Masham? There are campsites, parking and access to and from the town all day via routes not affected by the race.  There will be plenty of entertainment from the night before, throughout the day on Saturday and into Saturday evening.  Food stalls, bars, gift stalls and much more to make everyone's visit and stay an exciting and fun filled day.

Bah Humbugs traditional sweet shop will be open as usual on the market square, and we will also have a sweet stand on the recreation ground amongst all the other happy stall holders.

Why not pick up some sweets to see you through the day?  Something like Dandelion & Burdocks which are a delicious hard boiled sweet that really taste of the popular traditional retro drink.  Or if you have a more classic taste in mind you could grab yourself a bag of Sherbet Lemons, a great zingy lemon flavour with that delicious fizz of sherbet.

You may well be in Masham all day so you could use your time wisely and do a little shopping for gifts and treats while you're here.  Our Retro Sweets Hampers are always popular gifts, or perhaps you know someone who would like to receive a Best of British Jar, a Kilner jar packed full of traditional British hard boiled sweets.

You might just want to pop in for an ice cream and say hello.

Whatever you plan on doing for 5th July be sure to check out the routes and what's on.  Try looking at Masham's Community Office web site,  www.visitmasham.com or the Welcome to Yorkshire site www.yorkshire.com

Let's hope the sun shines and we all have a great day!
