For those of you not familiar with Jelly Bellys, they are America’s Original Gourmet Jelly Bean, a favourite with Presidents, Royalty and many celebrities. President Reagan had three and a half tons delivered to the White House for his inauguration party (in fact, the Blueberry flavour was created just for him!) and the beans were orbited into outer-space on the space shuttle Challenger. There are 50 flavours of Jelly Bellys and each bean can take up to 21 days to create the true to life taste. Not only are these beans absolutely delicious, but they are fat free, gluten free and suitable for people on Kosher and vegetarian diets!
There are only four pieces of Jelly Belly Art in the whole of the UK, all created by Britain’s own home grown artist Malcolm West. Malcolm explains: “First I create a rough pencil drawing, using a photograph of the subject. Then I paint a tight colour composition and finish by creating a mosaic of Jelly Belly jelly beans. I soak the beans in clear glue, wet the painting with more glue, and then slide the appropriately coloured beans into position. I mix a variety of colours in any one area to create an impressionistic look and vibrating colours and use all forty official flavours of Jelly Belly beans as they give me a full palette of colours. I treat each bean like a gem – laying each one is a very painstaking process. But the effect is very exciting”
For your chance to see Marilyn Monroe, head to Bah Humbugs where you’ll be warmly welcomed this Summer, and whilst you’re deliberating over how many beans have been used in the mosaic there are sure to be some Jelly Bellys on offer for you to try! To order Jelly Bellys online please click here.
